Meet this month's feature artist, Cassandra Dove
Cassandra Dove is a Canberra artist who makes expressive abstract paintings, largely inspired by the landscape and travel experiences. Cassandra’s creative process involves constant exploration, driven by intuition, innate curiosity and a spirit of adventure. Her work is characterised by layers of rich colours, textures, and gestural brushstrokes.
Cassandra regularly exhibits in selected group shows in Canberra and interstate. Her work was recognised in 2023 as finalist in the ACT Historic Places Art Prize, and The Waterbrook Landscape Prize. In 2023 Cassandra was awarded a CAPO Grant Award for Emerging Artist, and in the same year was a Gorman Arts Centre recipient of their Emerging Artist Residency Programme. She works from her studio at ANCA, Canberra.
Tell us a little bit about your work
In two words I would describe my work as ‘constantly evolving’. My creative process involves lots of play/exploration and each year brings a new evolution of painting in which I follow different paths within subject matter and style. Rather than pursuing a particular aesthetic within my painting, I allow inspiration and my experiences with the sources of inspiration to dictate the direction of the work. I am particularly drawn to abstraction and creating depth and story through mixed media.
I am currently creating a body of work for a solo exhibition in Belco Arts in October. Titled, Behind the View, this collection brings together my personal experiences in the landscape in Canberra and surrounding NSW, and my inner world as the artist. Conceptually, the paintings are my reconstruction of the natural landscape, which invite the audience to consider how they view their surrounding world.
“I hope that people feel drawn to a particular painting simply because ‘they just love it"
