Meet this month's feature artist, Kylie Fogarty
A lifelong artist, Kylie completed a Mentorship Program with the Charles Ginn Gallery, Brisbane in 2007. A move to Canberra in 2008 saw the establishment of her professional practice where she has enjoyed extending her practices through the ANU Centre for Continuing Education, plus attending workshops with esteemed artists such as Sue Taylor, and printmaker Jo Hollier. During her time spent with Sue Taylor, Kylie was introduced to the medium of liquid ink, a natural progression from her previous tool of choice, graphite pencil, sparking a great love and many explorations.
Heavily influenced by her formative years spent in Bundjalung National Park, recurring themes of coastal scenes, cloud formations, mountains, and rainforest are reflected in her works, along with her love of mood and atmosphere.
Tell us a little bit about your work
I have been infatuated with drawing from a young age. It is intrinsic to the process of my art practice and sense of self. Drawing enables a simplification of subject matter, providing a catalyst for interpretation, and exploration of my connection to the natural world. Intrigued by mood and atmosphere, this often includes cloud formations, coastal scenes, and rainforests whilst narrating moments of time." Exhibiting internationally and nationwide, Kylie has been a finalist and invited artist in the Kedumba Drawing Award 2020, Ravenswood Australian Women’s Art Prize, Grace Cossington Smith Art Award, and the Lynn McCrae Memorial Drawing Prize. Her works are housed in many collections, including being archived in the National Gallery of Australia in the Animalia International Print Exchange.
Using expressive yet considered mark-making, Kylie engages the use of negative space, linework, and a limited palette to invite consideration of her subject matter. Preferring the use of traditional dip ink pens, and bamboo reed pens, she enjoys the use of archival liquid inks to convey her love of mood and atmosphere. This love of drawing has extended into a diverse practice that includes drawing, printmaking, painting, and miniature works of art.
